FRSC Launches Special Road Safety Operation in Abia to Curb Fatal Accidents

UMUAHIA, Nigeria – The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has launched a special intervention campaign across Abia State aimed at reducing road crashes and preventing unnecessary loss of lives. The initiative is part of the Corps' renewed commitment to improving road safety and enforcing traffic regulations throughout the state.

The operation will focus on identifying and prosecuting motorists who violate traffic laws, particularly those whose actions endanger the lives of other road users. FRSC officials say the exercise will involve increased patrols, public awareness campaigns, and strict enforcement of road safety regulations.

According to the Corps, common traffic offences such as speeding, dangerous driving, overloading, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, use of mobile phones while driving, failure to wear seat belts, and non-compliance with traffic signs will attract stiff penalties.

The FRSC noted that the intervention became necessary following concerns over the increasing number of road crashes and fatalities recorded on major highways across Abia State. The Corps stressed that many of the accidents are preventable and are often caused by reckless driving and disregard for established traffic rules.

Motorists have been urged to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, obey speed limits, avoid dangerous overtaking, and cooperate with FRSC personnel during the enforcement exercise. Commercial transport operators were also advised to prioritize passenger safety by complying with all road safety requirements.

The Corps reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property on Nigerian roads, emphasizing that the campaign is not intended to punish road users but to encourage responsible driving and reduce avoidable accidents.

Residents and commuters have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that stricter enforcement of traffic laws will help improve safety on Abia roads and significantly reduce the number of fatal crashes.

The FRSC encouraged members of the public to support the campaign by adhering to traffic regulations and reporting reckless driving or other road safety violations to the appropriate authorities.
