34 Inmates Sit for First School Leaving Certificate Examination in Umuahia Prison

A total of 34 inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, have taken the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) examination as part of efforts to promote education and rehabilitation within the correctional facility.

The examination, organised in collaboration with relevant education authorities, is aimed at equipping inmates with basic educational qualifications to enhance their chances of successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.

Officials described the initiative as a significant step towards reducing illiteracy among inmates while encouraging personal development through education.

The Nigerian Correctional Service has continued to prioritise educational and vocational programmes across custodial centres nationwide, providing inmates with opportunities to acquire knowledge and skills that can help them build productive lives upon release.

The successful participation of the 34 inmates highlights the growing commitment to using education as a key tool for rehabilitation and social transformation within Nigeria's correctional system.
