Kano Hisbah Bans Movie Distribution on Mobile Phones to Uphold Islamic Values

 

The Kano State Hisbah Board has announced a ban on the distribution of movies through mobile phones, saying the move is aimed at safeguarding Islamic values and strengthening moral standards across the state.

According to the board, the decision forms part of renewed efforts to regulate the Kannywood film industry and curb the circulation of unapproved films, particularly through digital platforms that are difficult to monitor.

Hisbah said only licensed marketers and approved distribution channels will be permitted to circulate films, warning that individuals found distributing movies via mobile devices could face sanctions under the state's existing regulations.

The board explained that the ban is intended to discourage the spread of content considered offensive to Islamic teachings and the cultural values of Kano State. It added that stricter oversight would help ensure that films released to the public comply with the state's censorship guidelines.

Officials also urged filmmakers, producers and marketers to obtain the necessary approvals before releasing their works, stressing that compliance with censorship laws remains mandatory.

The latest directive is part of Kano State's broader efforts to regulate the entertainment industry in line with its religious and cultural principles. Hisbah reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing the new measures while encouraging stakeholders in the film industry to cooperate with authorities.
